One For The Thumb (and broken finger)
Yes I know it is already Wednesday and I am just now writing about the Steelers Super Bowl win from Sunday. Let me explain. I played an innocent game of flag football with Lauren and church friends Sunday afternoon before the game. By some means or another I managed to trip myself while running a route on one play and fell to the ground. While doing so I evidently caught myself in an awkward way with me left hand. I bent my index finger back and it was sore the rest of the game but I didn’t pay much attention to it. By that evening while I was watching the Super Bowl my fingertip was black and blue and severely bruised. When I woke up the next morning it was swollen bigger than my thumb and super sore to the touch. I couldn’t tell if it was broken or just badly sprained. I have had it in a splint and buddy taped to my middle finger most of the week to help it heal while I popped ibuprofen to reduce the swelling and the pain. This particular injury severely hindered my typing ability. Hunting and pecking is one hundred times slower than two hand typing when all 10 of my digits are fully operational. For this reason I didn’t even attempt to waste my time trying to make a post on this site. Today it is getting better. So here goes.
So after 14 years of coaching Cowher finally gets rewarded with his first Super Bowl Championship. It was great to see them come from behind as a wild card in the playoffs and earn their way to the top championship game. Maybe that is why Super Bowl XL was the most watched game in a decade. It was even more fitting that Jerome Bettis gets to retire in style after a decade of dedication to the team. What better place than in his own hometown of Detroit. Hines Ward proudly accepted the MVP award. He is another huge asset to the team and one of the reasons the Steelers have made it as far as the did. Of course the man on top of it all is Big Ben Roethlisberger who became one of the youngest QBs in NFL history to play in the Super Bowl along with Dan Marino. Maybe Ben’s lucky beard had something to do with it all. He is a very superstitious man and refused to shave it until the Steelers lost a game or won one for the thumb. Monday night on Letterman Dave helped Big Ben shave his beard. I also can’t forget to mention my boy Troy Polamalu. Even though he was not a huge factor Sunday he is a firecracker on the field and definitely another hot player to keep your eye on next season.
Now its time to celebrate. Pittsburgh held a parade for the city before the team goes away. To where you ask? To Disney World of course….where else? Of course this informal celebration came after the avid fans did their own celebration immediately after the game. Celebration or riots its all the same thing right? I wish I could have been up there in the Steel City Sunday night celebrating with the mobs in the street. That would be worth calling in sick to work on Monday. I need to grab my share of memorabilia merchandise before it is all gone.
Of course nothing goes off without a hitch. There was a lot of complaints coming from the Seattle fans and even head coach complaining about bad officiating. I know I am extremely biased but I did not seen anything that led me to believe the officials cost the Seahawks the game. Officials are only human afterall and nobody is perfect. Bad calls are made all season long so it is only reasonable to expect it to happen in the big game. For what it is worth the league came out with a formal statement defending the officials calls. Enough talking about all that crap. It will go down in the history books with a win for the Steelers. Besides, sports analysts are already predicting the Colts as next years champions only one day after this SB ended. I guess that magical crystal ball at ESPN knows all.
